We used Discovering Great Artists Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of the Great Masters for ages 4-12 from 2008-2009.
Likes: This is a hand-on art instruction book. My children loved this book and enjoyed the projects and lessons. It has the right amount of art appreciation and hand-on creativity.
It is easily adapted to use with older and younger children than what is suggested. The supplies are easily gathered and you can often use recycled materials. The book is colorful and the lessons are divided into a user friendly manner. The artists that have been selected give the students a good visual start on recognizing famous artworks.
The Chart of Contents is very useful in planning. It is divided up into artists, art styles, dates, styles, techniques, and levels. The are also many useful instruction tools in the back of the book called the Resource Guide. The website also has extra activities and resources. This book gives the teacher everything they could possibly need.
Dislikes: Some of the web links for the online artist's works are broken.

Likes: I like that it has a variety of artists and that you get to mimic their work! The activities range from easy to more complex for older kids
Dislikes:
Sort of boring presentation. My dd wasn't very interested in the info about the artist and wanted to just get to the activity. I wish there was something more for it and I didn't really know how to go about teaching it so we just did random artists each week. A lesson plan of some sort would be helpful.

Likes: I really love this art book. It has great ideas that kids of almost any age can do easily. It has an art history aspect that many art books are missing, so they discover an artist, then do some art similar to them. Just the other day, we taped paper under our tables and painted like Michelangelo. It was great fun and they remember that!
Dislikes: It is only a black and white book although it is easy enough to look up the art pieces on the internet to share.
