WriteShop specializes in incremental writing programs that make writing easier for all students, even those who might be reluctant. WriteShop Primary is their brand new series for the elementary ages (K-3), written by Nancy I. Sanders. The book is spiral-bound, making it easy to hold in your lap or set on the table without losing your place. It is also available in e-book format.
The Teacher's Guide begins with an introduction explaining the concept of teaching young children to write; a section on planning a schedule (there are 3 schedules suggested based on your child's skill level); teaching the lessons; and even a few pages on creating a "writing center" in your home. There is also an appendix that includes a master supply list divided by lesson/activity so that you can be prepared ahead of time. Supplies are basic -- crayons, construction paper, drawing paper, tape, and other household/office supply items.
Each lesson has a focus, a theme, and 8 activity sets. Each "set" builds on the next for cohesiveness and skills mastery. "Focus" includes things like personal writing, selecting a title, using a period at the end of a sentence, and so on. "Theme" includes animals, colors, rhymes, etc. "Activity sets" are the meat of the lesson -- the guided writing practice, reading, and creative projects.
Because of additional activities called "Flying Higher" throughout the book, I could give my daughter some extra challenges/projects. Although we used Book A, I think she's really ready for Book B.
What I like best about WriteShop Primary:
It's thorough, organized, easy-to-use, teacher-friendly with little prep time, and easily customized based on your child's skill level.
What I don't like:
E-book format too expensive/too close to print price. Need to purchase the accompanying Activity Worksheet Set separately.
